While some businesses have been able to remain in operation during these last few months of the covid-19 outbreak, many businesses have temporarily closed their doors or at least closed their brick and mortar facilities. As government lock-down recommendations begin to slowly loosen, it is important that businesses take extra care in their sanitation measures so that our society can press through this outbreak while still maintaining a flattened curve.
Here are a few tips on sanitizing your business to help keep yourself, your employees, and your customers as safe and healthy as possible.
Clean and Disinfect
While the terms “clean” and “disinfect” have been used interchangeably, both are advised when it comes to sanitizing. Prior to using disinfectant, you should be using soap and water on the surfaces that allow for it. Soap does a tremendous job at deactivating and killing live virus cells while also reducing other forms of germs and bacteria.
After using soap and water, follow up with an EPA approved disinfectant for use against SARS-CoV-2. Whatever product you end up using, be sure to follow the product label guidelines so that it can be fully effective in disinfecting the area. Other products you can use include alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol and appropriately diluted bleach solutions.
Be aware that it is not advised to use these on every surface, so if you’re not sure, you might want to do a quick online search to be sure. When it comes to bleach, it is crucial to closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions on using and diluting the product properly. Never mix bleach with other chemicals.
NOTE: It is important to wear disposable gloves in the cleaning and disinfecting process. While wearing gloves, do not touch anything but the supplies and the surface you are cleaning. Anything you touch with your gloves on will need to be cleaned and disinfected as well. When you are completely done, remove your gloves and wash your hands properly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
Sanitize Frequently
You will want to thoroughly clean and disinfect as frequently as possible, especially highly trafficked areas and objects that are touched often. This includes items like door knobs, telephones, staplers, any communal tables or chairs or seating areas, cash registers, and more.

Prevention is Key
Beyond cleaning and disinfecting, there are multiple ways you can help promote health and social distancing while your business starts to get back to the normal day to day duties. Putting new and simple policies in place can help reduce the rate of spread of covid-19 and other illnesses that can get passed around.
If your business has open seating like in a restaurant or coffee shop, consider arranging your seating in order to allow for 6 feet between customers from different households. Have sanitizer spray available and encourage your customers to disinfect before they sit down and after they leave.
If your business requires payment transactions between your employees and customers, consider investing in some germ shields which provide an element of protection and give both parties a little peace of mind.
By enacting a few changes in how we run our businesses and how we follow sanitation procedures, we will be able to achieve more in terms of reducing risk of infection and getting our businesses back on track.
